SHS Swimming Thrive Despite Lack of a Pool | Boston Herald

BOSTON HERALD | by Dan Ventura Once again, the Sandwich High swimming team has overcome a lack of swimming facilities to thrive at the sectional meets.

At the girls sectional diving tournament at the Lincoln Hancock Pool, Quincy, on Thursday, junior Megan Forrester captured the second place spot with a score of 447.75 (a new Sandwich High chool girls sectionals record), while senior Mackenzie Hagist placed 10th with a score of 409.25 and senior Bailey Maiato placed 11th with a score of 407.8. The Sandwich team took three of the top 11 spots – out of a field of 19 sectionals-qualified competitors. At the boys swimming and diving sectionals meet at Boston University on Saturday, senior Brian Cundiff set a new Sandwich High School record in the 50 yard freestyle at 22.21. He placed 4th in that event. Brian also placed 10th in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 50.15. Sophomore Billy Dykas placed 8th out of 22 competitors  in diving with a score of 403.60  - setting a new SHS boys 11 dive record. Junior Kaitlyn Scott placed 16th in the 100 yard butterfly and 17th in the 100 breastroke at the girls swimming sectionals meet at Wellesley College on Sunday.

"I am so proud to see these student athletes achieve these results given the adversity of having their home pool unavailable for training and competing over the past two seasons," said Sandwich swimming coach Tony Compton. "I can only imagine the success they could have had if the SHS pool repairs had been completed for the season."

All six athletes move on to the Division 2 State championships this weekend at MIT in Cambridge. The girls compete on Saturday and the boys on Sunday.
